Oversize/overweight permits for WV are ordered online. Most of the time the permit is self-issued, but there are times when it needs to go the permitting office to get reviewed. Both single trip and superload permits are good for 5 days. Single trip permit fee is $20.00 for overweight oroverdimensional plus $.04 per ton mile for overweight.

OPERATING TIME:

Sunrise to sunset. Weekend travel is allowed for anything not over 14’ wide, but it must be requested by checking the box on the application. Turnpike weekend travel: <95’ long, 14’6 high and 110,000 lbs.


LEGAL DIMENSIONS:

Width: 8'6" Interstate and designated roads, 8' on non-designated.

Height: 13'6"

Length: 53' trailer or load on Interstate and designated highways, ( measurement from tractor rear axle to trailer first axle cannot exceed 37'); any length on Interstate and national network highways; 70' overall length on US and WV routes.

Overhang: 3' front, 6' rear

Weight: 80,000 lbs gross (65,000 lbs on non-designated routes)

Single – 20,000 lbs, tandem - 34,000 lbs, tridem -42,500 lbs (8' spacings)


ESCORTS:

Interstate/4 or more divided highways:

Width: over 12’ – 1 rear escort, over 14’ – 2 escorts, over 15’ – 3 escorts, over 16’ – on case-by-case basis

Hight: over 15’ – 1 high pole in addition to other escorts

Length: over 95’ – 1 escort, over 100’ – 2 escorts

Overhang: over 10’ front or rear – 1 escort

2-lane highways:

Width: 10’6- 12’ – 1 front escort, over 12’ – 2 escorts, over 15’ – 3 escorts, over 16’ – case by case basis

Hight: over 15’ – 1 high pole in addition to other escorts

Length: over 75’ – 1 rear escort, over 95’ – 2 escorts

Overhang: over 10’ front or rear – 1 escort

LOW IMPACT MONITORS:

$150 for the first bridge, $100 for the second bridge, and $50 for each additional bridge up to a maximum of $750. Permit monitors may be assigned in certain situations, with their fees determined on a case-by-case basis.


DOZERS:

Bulldozers may be hauled with the blades on, so long as the blade is angled away from oncoming traffic and the total width of the load is not more than 14’. If the load is more than 14’ wide, the blade must be taken off and hauled on a separate trailer (if the load is also overweight).


SIGNS, FLAGS & LIGHTS:

"Oversize Load" signs front and rear and six flags are required for all oversize loads. The flags should be displayed one on each side of the front bumper of the power unit and one on each top corner of the load. Overhang over 4' needs flag or flashing amber light. There are no sign or flag requirements for overweight only loads.
